PROFILE OF PROF. ODUTAYO ODUMOSU

BIOGRAPHY OF PROFESSOR ODUTAYO ODUMOSU

Professor Odutayo Odumosu was born on July 26, 1956 at Ijebu-Igbo in Nigeria. He attended his elementary school at the St. Andrew's College Demonstration School Oyo, from 1961-1966 from where he proceeded to Molusi College, Ijebu-Igbo where he won the most prestigious Awards as the best Science and English Student in 1969.

He went further at the University of Nigeria (Nsukka) for his first degree from 1975-1979. He also attended the University of Sussex from 1982-1983 for his Master of Philosophy Degree and the University of Lagos from 1983-1984 for his postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE). In 1991 he was enrolled in the ranks of established academics in his chosen field after he had successfully defended his doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Degree in Geography, Urban and Regional Planning.

Prof. Odutayo Odumosu started his academic career at the Lagos State University in 1985.This was after having distinguised himself in several capacities as a teacher with the Local Schools Boards, Oyo (1972-1975), and his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at Government College, Makurdi (1979-1980). At the Ogun State College of Education, Ijebu-Ode, he taught for Five Years from 1980-1985 and attended the rank of Lecture Grade III.

Prof. Odutayo Odumosu was employed as a Lecturer grade II in 1985.He was promoted Lecturer grade I in 1990 and became a senior Lecturer in 1994.

He was Guest Lecturer at Suit College, Oxford University and Lewes University of Third Age, Lewes, England in 1995. He became an Associate professor of Geography and Regional Planning in 2000. Professor Odutayo Odumosu was appointed full Professor in 2000 as a fitting reward for his industry and academic resourcefulness.

His experience as a University teacher and administrator spans the gamut of academic life. He was the President, Senior Staff Association, Ogun State College of Education in 1982. He was also the Faculty Coordinator, General Studies Programme, Lagos State University between 1988 and 1990. He also Chaired the Faculty of Arts and Social Science Admission Committee from 1988-1990 and Head of Geography Unit, Lagos State University from 1986-1990. He was also the Acting Head, Department of Geography and Planning, from 1990-1993.

He has also been a senate member of Lagos State University, since 1990. Owing to his appointment administrative acumen, he was Acting Dean, Student Affairs in 1998. From 1997-1999, he was the Director, Centre for Planning Studies and Coordinator MURP/MTP Programmes from 1995-1999. He became the substantive Dean of Student Affairs from 1998-2001 and member of the University Governing Council since 1999.

Perhaps due to the strength of his character, he was also appointed to the sensitive position of the pioneer Head, Surulere Campus of the Lagos State University in 2000 and held the position till 2002, a position he used to consolidate the fledgling School of Communication. He was later entrusted with the Deanship of his Faculty from 2002-2004 and has been the Chairman of the Car Park and Traffic Management Committee.

Prof. Odumosu's academic profile also reveals that he is widely recognised both within and Outside the country with nearly one hundred academic publications to his credit. Apart from is publications, he has also taught various courses at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Prof. Odumosu represents one of the best of his generation as an academic and university administrator. Between 1988-1993, he was a member of the General Studies Board, Member, Building Works and Site Committee between 1990-1996, Member Academic Planning Committee, 1998-date, Member, LASU Farm Management between 1988-1991, and also Member, Curriculum Committee 1992-2000. He has also been Associate Member, Charlton University, Centre of Excellence for Research and Development, Canada.

He is also a Fellow and Member of Various academic and professional bodies. He is a member of the World Open Universities Association, Commonwealth Open Universities Association, North American Education, Member, Nigerian Institute of Town Planning, Member, Nigerian Geographical Association, Member, Social Science Council, Member Association of British Commonwealth Fellows and member, Institute of British Geographers. He is also a fellow of Data Processing Management of Nigeria, Fellow, Nigerian Institute of Shipping and Fellow, Association of Commonwealth Universities.

He has also served as various special committees which include the following; Senate Representative, Interview Panel for the Position of the University Director of Works and Services (1997), Member, Vice- Chancellor's Committee for Campus Beautification (1998), Chairman, FRSC, LASU (1996-date), Chairman, LASU-PTA (1997-date), Member, Nigerian Institute of Town Planners' Presidential Committee in Lagos Bomb Blast, Member, Task Force on LASU Community Bank Project, Founding Coordinator, Centre for Planning Studies (1997), Founding Coordinator, Centre for Refugee Studies, (1997) and Member, Governing Council Board in Computer Literacy Project. He has also been member Remratation Committee for LASU Chalet and Guest Houses, Badagry, Member, Senate Committee in the Review of Educational Technology Center and Chairman, Committee in Centre for Tourism, Hospitality Management and Confectionery Studies.

In addition to his numerous academic publications, Professor Odumosu has also Edited and co-edited various hoods including the following, The Planet, The Beacon, LASU Journal of Humanities, Abuja, A journal of Nigerian Studies, Business Journal, LAGOS Business Review and LASU Social Sciences Journal. Some of his Edited books include Refugee Phenomenon in Africa, (1997), Lagos State in Maps (2002), Social Problem and social works in Nigeria (2002), and Sustainable Development in Africa. This is in addition to a substantial number of articles in reputable national and international journal.

Professor Odutayo Odumosu as a family man, remains simply, humble, deeply religious, God fearing and humanitarian person. He is a member of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Oto Awori. He is blessed with a Wife Mrs. Kemi Odumosu and Four Children, Odubukunmi, Odujoke, Odutola, Odufunke.
